Work starts on a significant upgrade to Swindon Tennis Centre. Soon the award-winning community facility in Swindon will boast 10x LED Floodlit tennis courts and a floodlit 4x court Mini Zone for kids!
Since opening its doors in 2014, St Marks Recreation Ground courts have been popular with over 1,500 household members and an extensive programme of activities, including community coaching and organised matches with Swindon Tennis Club.
The Centre has only ever had four floodlit tennis courts, and during the winter months sees high demand for play. The Centre's key objective is to work on a project to create more opportunities to play throughout the year by installing lights on all courts.
On Tuesday, 20th September, work will start to upgrade the existing 10x court facility (of which 4x courts are currently floodlit) to a 10x court LED Floodlit facility. This major upgrade is due to complete before the clocks change in October. During this time, there will be some disruption to users.
The project has been made possible through capital contributions totalling over £130,000 from Central Swindon North Parish Community Library & Leisure Trust, Central Swindon North Parish Council, National Tennis Association and the LTA.
Once complete, the Centre will enable better access to tennis, offering floodlit tennis play every day up until 10 pm, alongside helping expansion opportunities for the coaching programme and Swindon Tennis Club activities. This project's other significant benefit will be reducing the Centre's carbon footprint by installing more efficient LED lighting.
Ed Nieburg from National Tennis Association said:
"We have been working at St Marks Recreation Ground since 2014, and as the facility has matured and developed, there has been a growing need to expand floodlit courts to allow for more play during the darker winter months. I am delighted that we have secured a substantial capital fund through partnership working to enable this project to become a reality. This money will go towards much-needed and improved tennis facilities for Swindon and will allow the Centre to make a wider impact on tennis in the local community."
